Information About Grief/Bereavement Counseling

Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard offers many free services to island residents and our visitors. At Hospice of MV we recognize that the needs of individuals and families extend far beyond the medical aspects of chronic illness and patient care, and we are dedicated to serving the myriad of emotional, social and spiritual needs as they arise. Grief and bereavement counseling are included in these services for individuals and families before and after a death has occurred. The Hospice of MV grief and bereavement program offers support to persons of all ages, ethnicities and belief systems, whether or not Hospice cared for their loved one. The Goals of Grief/Bereavement Counseling are to provide an opportunity for individuals to obtain grief support, education and referrals around issues of grief, and loss. Our professional Staff has special expertise in helping people understand the challenges of the grieving process over time and is especially sensitive to the additional stressors that effect the family and caretaker. Grief counseling can occur at any time during the process of the patient's dying. Then, the grief counseling takes on an additional focus which is “bereavement” that begins following the loss. Grief/Bereavement counseling can also begin at a later point from the loss occurrence (often involving weeks, months, or even years). It is essential to remember that every individual is unique in the way that they experience their loss, and every loss is different depending on circumstance, cause of death, type of relationship, and age of the deceased. Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard works carefully to provide a safe and confidential place to work through the natural stages of grief.
